Choosing your Lawnmower
Best Buy
Often the choice of mower represents an obstacle towards the best purchase for our garden.
The first question to ask is how large the surface of the garden is and what its characteristics are: whether it is free, whether it has many obstacles (trees, plants, flowerbeds, outdoor furniture, etc.), whether it is flat or sloping.
Lawnmowers are divided into 3 main categories based on their power supply:
– Corded electrics
– Battery operated
– Combustion engine
Each category can boast models with different powers and characteristics depending on the use for which they are intended.
1. Let's start from the size of the garden and the type of lawnmower and its recommended power
Small gardens, up to approximately 300 m2
For small green areas and lawns you can opt for an electric row or battery-powered lawnmower, with a cutting width of up to 40 cm.
Electrical: recommended power of 900-1800W
Battery operated: recommended power of 18V
Medium-sized gardens, up to approximately 500 m2
For medium-sized lawns, the best choice is a battery-powered or petrol-powered lawnmower with a cutting width between 44 and 53 cm.
Battery operated: recommended power from 18V to 36V
Explosive: recommended displacement of 140-200 cc
Large gardens, up to approximately 1000 m2
For large gardens and lawns, it is best to choose a battery-powered or petrol-powered lawnmower with a cutting width between approximately 43 and 50 cm.
Battery operated: the recommended power is 36V, with a good amperage of 5 Ah
Explosive: recommended displacement of 140-200 cc
Very large gardens, over 1000 m2
For very large lawns and gardens, a lawnmower with a petrol engine and a cutting width of 51 to 56 cm and a displacement of more than 150 cc or lawn tractors is highly recommended.
As regards the advancement system, lawnmowers are divided into: "push or traction".
The choice affects the handling of the machine:
– Push lawnmower: they are a good choice if you work on flat terrain of a maximum size of 200-300 m2.
– Self-propelled lawnmowers: they are the optimal choice if you work on larger terrain, on slopes or
irregular with dips and bumps.
2. The last major distinction for choice is: electric, battery operated or burst?
Let's look at the Pro hey Against of all three categories
ELECTRIC WIRE MOWER
PRO
It is light, easy to handle and has a lower price than the others. Requires little maintenance and cleaning. It is a good solution if you are unfamiliar with starting and maintaining those with internal combustion engines. It offers “unlimited” autonomy and does not need to be recharged or refueled. Ideal for lawns and condominium gardens or in the city because it is silent and does not emit exhaust gases typical of combustion.
AGAINST
Need to have a power socket nearby and/or run meters of extension cord around the garden, which becomes quite inconvenient if you have to go around obstacles such as trees, plants, flowerbeds, garden furniture, etc.
BATTERY POWERED LAWN MOWER
PRO
It allows maximum freedom and ease of handling compared to the electric one as it does not require the use of an electric cable. It requires little maintenance and cleaning, and is suitable for medium and large sized gardens. It is a very practical solution if you are unfamiliar with starting and maintaining combustion engines.
AGAINST
Battery life may be an issue if you intend to use the mower continuously for long periods of time. The only remedy in this case is to have several batteries in order to interchange them when using the lawnmower. However, today technologies have progressed considerably and there are battery-powered lawnmowers on the market with an autonomy of 500/600 m2 with a single battery. Furthermore, compared to a few years ago, they cost little more than their internal combustion engine counterparts.

PETROL LAWN MOWER
PRO
It is the most powerful solution, allows great freedom of movement and is the most suitable for large lawns and gardens. Suitable for frequent, long and heavy use, such as cutting lawns with tall and/or tough grass.
AGAINST
The internal combustion engine needs to be refueled, requires more orderly and constant maintenance and cleaning. It is certainly much noisier than other types and emits combustion exhaust gases. Furthermore, those who are not familiar with manual starting could run into some problems, even if the more advanced models have electric starting.
