Above ground swimming pools: Purchase, Installation and Maintenance

Guida all'acquisto di una pisicna fuori terra

The definitive guide topurchasing an above ground swimming pool: which pool to buy, how to prepare the garden to host the pool and what precautions to take to maintain the pool.

Above ground swimming pools are the choice of those who want to have a swimming pool on the terrace or in the garden without having to carry out particular construction work, request permits, undergo a bureaucratic process and pay additional taxes.

What is an above ground pool?

A above ground swimming pool it is a tub of water made of a resistant sheet multilayer supported, once filled with water, by a metal structure or by inflatable rings attached to the sheet itself.

The advantages of a swimming pool made like this are immediately understood:

  • less expensive;
  • fewer works and permits to request as it is a temporary and dismantled structure;
  • practical and quick to assemble and disassemble;
  • suitable for any space, terrace or garden.

Can I install an above ground pool in any space? No.

Before installing an above ground swimming pool it is necessary to make sure that the space that will host it, be it a garden or terrace, meets some requirements:

  • The floor of support of the swimming pool must be perfectly flat, not sloping, free of holes or unevenness;
  • the ground must be clean, without stones or roots which could puncture the cloth; in fact the pressure exerted by liters and liters of water on a single point would exert a force that could damage irreparably the pool towel;
  • must be available there electric current to power the filter pump (this is especially valid for medium and large swimming pools).

I don't have a space available with these characteristics! Can I still have an above ground pool?

Yes. Here are the preparation works that can make your garden or terrace suitable for hosting an above ground swimming pool:

    • if it is a garden, it is appropriate cut the grass;
    • to preserve the cloth it is possible to spread a mattress/mat on the ground.
    • if the ground is not perfectly level, you can intervene with stabilizing sand or with draining resin tiles.

  • inflatables
  • rigid with tubular structure
  • rigid with coating

To choose the right swimming pool to buy, here is the complete guide.

Pool maintenance: what should I do to always have a perfect above ground pool?

The small swimming pools they typically do not require water filtering and cleaning, as the water can be changed more frequently.

Medium and large swimming pools need to maintain a constant level of cleanliness, both through the appropriate chemical products for swimming pools and through the constant filtering action performed by the pump.

Medium sized pools they typically use one pump with cartridge filter, which cleans the water flowing through the pump; clearly the cartridges must be replaced with a certain frequency.

The large pools must necessarily be equipped with pumps with greater water flow, capable of filtering all the water in a given amount of time (no longer than 8 hours and not when bathing). For these reasons we use the sand pumps (glass) inside which the grains of sand intercept the dirt and instead allow the water molecules to filter through. Sand needs to be replaced less frequently than cartridge filters.

In order for the pump to correctly carry out the water cleaning work, grids must be installed upstream of the pump which prevent particles of too large dimensions (insects, leaves, paper) from entering the pump gears.

Water disinfection: which products to use? Are there less aggressive solutions, also suitable for children?

When swimming pool users are children or people suffering from particular allergies, it is possible to replace the classic chemical products for water disinfection (chlorine, anti-algae and pH regulators) with: oxygen-based solutions (less aggressive towards the body and skin), saline solutions (excellent, but very aggressive towards swimming pools) or also electric chlorinators which disinfect using chlorine, generated by electrolysis directly in the water, drastically reducing the use of external chemical agents.
