Is an electric lawnmower or a petrol lawnmower better?

Depends: one type of lawnmower is not absolutely better than the other. Let's analyze the two possibilities.

Lawnmower with petrol engine

You have a medium-large garden and does the wire bother you? We recommend a petrol lawnmower. But be careful: if you have slopes higher than 30% combustion engines are no good. There lubrication of the engine, in fact, is affected by the slope, because it is unable to draw oil from the sump).

Gasoline engines of this type are enough standardized even between different brands, the most famous engine manufacturer is certainly Briggs & Stratton. One thing to check is that the engine is OHV type (overhead valve), because they are more engines modern and efficient (like those of cars), and so on quick start.

What makes the difference between a quality lawnmower and a cheaper one is therefore theset of components (bearings, clutch, wheels, handle, transmission, body). For example, plastic wheels are certainly cheaper than steel ones; a well-designed and ergonomic handle (the handlebars) is certainly a factor to evaluate; the wheels mounted on roller bearings allow for considerable ease of use.

Electric lawnmower

You like simple things and don't have time to waste on maintenance? This is the product for you. It is silent and light, immediate to start, does not emit exhaust fumes, and is ideal for small to medium gardens.

It is advisable to purchase it with slightly higher power oversized as the cutting diameter increases, without being fooled by prices that are too low. This is because, with the first cuts and with tall grass, you avoid straining (or even worse, burning) the electric motor.

Example: with a cutting diameter of 34cm at least one engine is recommended 1,400 Watts.

Push or self-propelled lawnmower?

Whatever the power supply of the lawnmower (electric, petrol engine or battery) it is possible to choose to purchase a push lawnmower or self-propelled.

What does it mean if the lawnmower is self-propelled?
The self-propelled lawnmower it is a machine whose advancement is facilitated by the engine which, providing traction to the wheels, moves the mower forward at a constant speed – usually 3.6 km/h.

When is a self-propelled lawnmower suitable?
The self-propelled lawnmower is one forced choice for those who have medium-large gardens, also equipped with slopes; in fact the traction lawnmower allows you to cut the grass without particular effort and the traction allows you to do so move the lawnmower forward easily even in wet or slippery grass conditions.

A good quality petrol lawnmower usually has the steel or aluminum body: this means that the weight to be advanced can also be 30kg. Traction is definitely one way to go much less effort.

When to choose the push lawnmower?
The mower with combustion engine push it costs less of a self-propelled lawnmower, this however means that the effort to move the lawnmower forward will have to be done by the person cutting the grass.

Choosing the push lawnmower is advisable for those who have to cut grass in gardens or lawns with many shrubs or bushes and must move back and forth the lawnmower at the obstacle to completely cut the grass. Doing this type of finishing with a self-propelled lawnmower is certainly not easy.

What is the price of a good lawnmower?

A good quality lawnmower it has its price and obviously as the price decreases you lose money quality of components (especially engine, bearings, transmission and wheels). For this reason, it is advisable to choose a lawnmower from a brand that guarantees, even for the lowest-end product, an acceptable quality standard. Read: why we recommend Oleomac lawnmowers.
